Yes, we know. It takes about 15 minutes, and it's boring as listening to the weather forecast in Danish. But it makes a huge difference. If we all shut down our computers properly for a year, we'd undo all the damage George Bush did in one typical morning. Now, that may make you feel a but defeatist. But we've got to start somewhere. The journey of a thousand steps begins with pulling on your trainers and saying 'A thousand steps, huh? Is that like going to the station and back or is it longer than that?'

    I don't use computer much. I often use it at a fixed time and when I'm done with it, I always shut down properly. I really don't like to keep it in standby mode because it only takes 1-2 minutes to start it. Whenever starting or shutting down your computer, just think twice whether you have anything really important to do. Don't use it just to kill time. 20 August 2010, 09:51

    I often use my computer at a fixed time, actually don't use it much so when I'm done with it, I always shut down. I don't like to keep it in standby mode because it just takes only 1-2 minutes to start it.     Computer says no!

    Plugs off at the mains. I have yet to buy one of those switches that shuts everything down when with one button, one day.

    1) go on to start
    2) go to the 'shut down' button
    3) click the middle button (shut down)
    4) click yes!

    ICT Monitors

    In year 5 we have an ICT monitor. Their job is to make sure that all the computers are turned off at the end of every day. They even check the ICT suite in out school to make sure that we are not wasting any energy!!

    Saves the battery too...

    I turn off and unplug my little laptop and use it on battery until the charge is completely gone, and only then do I plug it in again. That keeps the battery at maximum life too. 21 January 2010, 23:18

    I always resist the temptation to harangue people too much into recycling, switching appliances off, not using plastic bags etc., While I feel really strongly that these are really simple things everyone can (and should!) do without a second thought, I have to remind myself that it's never nice to have something rammed down your throat or made to feel guilty for not playing your part. But....my sister ALWAYS leaves her computer screen on, it's tucked away in a corner unit with a door to it, so once the door's shut, it's 'out of sight, out of mind'. This has bugged me for ages and I find myself torn between wanting to point out the huge waste of energy it's using up and ignoring the buzzing emanating from behind the door so that I don't come across all do-goody.
