Action #038

Don't overfill your kettle

This action has been done 23,275 times which means we've sipped our way to saving roughly 349.125 kg of CO2.

How we did the maths

Here's a really easy action you can start doing - only fill your kettle with the water you need. Good thing is (aside from being great for the environment, blah, blah, blah) it takes less time to boil, so quicker cup of tea. Brilliant.

    Choice with possitive side effects.

I recently decides to start drinking tea without milk, so as to save money but mainly loose weight, a side effect of this is ive noticed i chose to have less cups of tea and so use the kettle alot less, adding this in with only using as much as i need has made me feel better about the energy bill of the household and well hoping weight it lost soon to so yea. Yay! 25 April 2010, 20:42

    New kettle

When we replaced our old kettle we chose one that was energy efficient and had clear markings for number of cups onside. As we have recently been given an energy monitor by British Gas we are very aware of which household items use a lot of power. The kettle is very energy hungry so it makes sense to just boil what you need and no more. 08 April 2010, 08:57

    Simply rational

I don't get it! What's the advantage to overfilling a kettle? No advantage. A slower cup of tea.

What also riles me is when people boil the kettle, leave the room, come back and flick the kettle back on. The water WILL still be hot after 5 minutes. I'm a kettle Nazi at home.

    dan-ger-ous

one time i overfilled the kettle and when it had finished boiling in the kettle, the water inside started to bubble up and spill out of the kettle because there was too much water inside of it, and some water splattered on me and burnt me. 15 February 2010, 21:36

    And the tea goes on...

Well, at our house we make an entire pot of tea with all the water and what we do not drink gets put in the fridge and drunk as iced tea later on. 23 January 2010, 18:19

    too much hot water

working on this one. It's a life time habit to put too much water in the kettle. Usually I'm rushing about doing a load of things at the same time so don't notice how much water is in the kettle. 08 January 2010, 00:10

    Overfilling

I'm getting better at this, but old habits die hard! When you're cooking or making tea, it's routine to fill it to the top-but I am getting better and now only use a little bit for teas and coffees... 16 October 2009, 11:44

    eco kettles

i'm going to buy an eco kettle this week that allows me to use only the amount i need for each drink. Saves water and energy and according to electrical store Curry's they promise "Buy any appliance from us and we recyle your old one for free." so they can have my old leaky one. : )

    Hot Shot

I wish I'd had the foresight to have the hot water on demand spout installed in my kitchen. I missed that boat - so, I got a Sunbeam Hotshot. It heats up a large mug of water very quickly - much faster than running the microwave or heating it on the stove. It also dispenses right into my cup. A quick and easy solution and no waste.

    Lots of tea

I drink a lot of tea. And Miso soup too. So I use the kettle a lot and used to overfill it a lot too. But now I have officially stopped overfilling the kettle and shall never do it again. I am very proud to have completef Action 38 and I encourage all you avid tea drinkers to do the same.
