just went into my local town hall, where on the day they were asking people to give blood, and seeing as i had nothing to do on the day i thought why not give a little blood, it could go a long way to helping someone. 08 February 2010, 09:15

Easy and (almost) pain-free
This is a wonderful way of helping other people, and I'd also like to think that if I ever needed a transfusion someone else has been thinking of humankind as a whole and donated their blood to help me and others. The next time will be my 26th, and I hope to be able to continue as long as possible 11 December 2009, 11:34

ich habe eine neue idee: wenn man feststellt, dass die Nachbarin oder der Nachbar schon sehr alt und nicht mehr ganz so mobil ist, empfiehlt es sich anzubieten für sie oder ihn einkaufen zu gehen! es spart einen Essen-auf-Rädern-Bringdienst und man hat sich gleich mal mit seinen Nachbarn bekannt gemacht...

Giving blood is such an awesome thing. I am giving for my second time this weekend and hope to give again in 56 days..then again in another 56 days. I want to become a regular donor now that I am old enough. :] I think everyone should become a regular donor 07 April 2009, 23:11

Give Plasma

I give plasma twice a week and have done so for about 4 yrs. They pay you a small amount for donating but that is not why I do it. The plasma is used to help Hemophiliacs,burn victims and adults and children suffering from may diseases.You could save a life!! This only takes about an hour and does so much good. Consider donating at a local plasma donor center in your town. 30 July 2008, 12:02

about giving blood
- Most people can give blood. If you are generally in good heath, age 17 to 65 (if it’s your first time) and weigh at least 7st 12Ib you can donate.
- You can give blood every 16 weeks (that's about every four months).
- Your blood will be taken to one of our many blood centres up and down the country. There the blood will undergo some rigorous tests to make sure it's clear of things like HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis.
- Once the blood has been sorted into its different types, and all the tests are clear, it's then distributed to hospitals to meet their predicted demand. There your blood is used on whoever needs it most.
- Blood is composed of cells suspended in a liquid. The liquid portion is the plasma, from which therapeutic fractions and derivatives are made.
- Suspended in the plasma are three types of cells. Red cells which carry oxygen. White cells which fight infection. Platelets which stop bleeding in injuries.
- The most common type of blood clasification is the ABO grouping. It was discovered by Karl Landsteiner in 1900. Red Blood Cells have a protein coat on their surface which distinguishes them. According to this blood is divided into four groups:
  - A (A oligosaccharide is present)
  - B (B oligosaccharide is present)
  - AB (A and B oligosaccharides are present)
  - O (neither A nor B, only their precursor H oligosaccharide present)
- Group O is the most common which means it is in high demand.
- 8,000 units of blood are needed every day to meet hospital demand.
- In 2008 The National Blood Service collected 2.1 million donations from about 1.6 million donors. Although that sounds a lot, it reflects only 4% of the population, giving two or three times a year.
- The average adult has around 5 trillion red blood cells in one litre of blood.Which means you have on average 25 trillion red cells running around inside you, although 25 million (or 0.1%) of them die every day. That works out at roughly 300 a second.
- William Harvey was the first physician to discover that blood circulates round the body back in 1628. Sir Christopher Wren (St Paul's Cathedral Christopher Wren) actually injected fluids into the circulation of animals, using an instrument invented by the aforementioned Mr Harvey.
- The first successful blood transfusion was carried out in 1665 by Dr Richard Lower. He used dogs as the donor and recipient. However, when they started performing transfusions on humans, they couldn't understand why the people receiving the blood kept dying. It wasn't until 1900 that Dr Karl Landsteiner discovered the ABO blood group system and realised that human patients needed to be given compatible blood. He got the Nobel Prize for his discovery.
- The Blood Transfusion Service was formed in 1946.
