I regularly read stories to my grandchildren age 5 and 3, the last one was to Hollie the 3 year old and was a library book called "A squash and a squeeze" and she loves joining in with the punch line ie the title. So soon back to the library for another book. 10 May 2010, 08:53Favourite Stories
Always loved Farmer Duck, of course the Gruffalo and currently enjoying Room on the Broom. These all have a lovely rhythm which is enjoyable to read and listen to but expect to be interrupted to talk about the pictures. Just occasionally I have to be a good sport and read Ben 10 Alien Force or Transformers, but the kids don't really enjoy them as much and the interest soon fades. 29 April 2010, 11:43Read with a child

Today I went to a foundation's library to do my voluntary turn. This is my first day in this voluntary action. I met many children and accompanied them in library, play and draw with them and of course laugh with them.I really enjoy this and somehow I realized that I'm not the one who guide and teach them because to be honest I'm the one who learn many things from them! I really like it and gratefull to God for giving me this chance. 13 March 2010, 15:40

I got to read bedtime stories for my nephew when I saw him last. Though as he's only 5 he's not much into long "bookie" stories but wants me to read Donald Duck comics to him. So he got two sets of comics and then we solved the detective story together - or who am I kidding - he solved it on his own, he's so much more clued up than I! Bedtime story also involves making up two songs about the dental bacteria trolls Carius and Bactus - this time round they were drinking coffee theuir mum's black coffee but thought it ytucky so spat it out, and in the second song they were bouncing up and down on the roof and then fell down right onto trampolines. Nothing more fun than getting into the imaginative mood of a small child! 01 March 2010, 07:48Better than TV

My daughter is in 1st grade and is learning how to read. But she loves to read simple chapter books with me and my mom. Last week she had to have dental work done on her bottom teeth, extracting two baby teeth to make room for big teeth. I read her the book "Junie B. Toothless Wonder". She loved it so much that she wanted to get those two top front teeth out too. After her dental work the dentist said that they should come out with in a week,s o she worke don them and worked on them, and she got them both out! She's in love with that book now, and often takes it to bed with her so she can practice her reading. I'm so glad we did this!Reading with small people

If you go to school that is a secondary and primary combined then take advantage of the fact you can read with much younger students. I became best friends with a girl in year one because I gave up most of my lunch times that I wasn't busy on to look after her and read. It was also really fun for me and I have now decided to become a teacher when I grow up. 06 January 2009, 15:32how do you.............
"Mummy, how do you cook tea?" said Ruby rabbit. "You have to learn, Ruby" said Mummy "Then how do you make televisions?" said Ruby. "I don t' know" said Mummy ."Then how do you-" "Oh do be quiet Ruby" said Mummy . "Ok" said Ruby . "Big sis, how was earth made?" "Because god made it silly ! Now go away!" Shouted big sis. "Daddy can I ask you something?"Asked Ruby. "Sorry I am very busy right now,Ruby" Said Daddy "Ok" said Ruby sadly. " I know instead of asking questions I will find out the answers!" said Ruby. "That is a good idea" said Daddy. THE END! 04 January 2009, 06:59vouchers for Christmas
Hello Tanis, I love the idea of Financial Times paper lanterns! reading the messages about Christmas and making gifts did make me want to start knitting again. I made a blanket for my friend's baby Eva and it was so much fun to do (basically a giant pink square - it was my first attempt at knitting after a break of at least twenty years!) and Sarah (Eva's mum) loved it and now it's being used for their second baby, Laura.
I was thinking that giving friends a babysitting voucher might be a good idea. no expiry date (although of course if they leave it too long the children might be too old for a babysitter) and then you get to see your friends, read stories to their children and everyone is happy. of course in those hours when you're pottering around their house after the children are asleep you might also discover that that the scarf you gave one of them for Christmas is now being used as a pillow for the dog, but that's fine too.
vouchers and handmade presents have to be the way forward.
and of course they show that a lot more thought and effort has gone into them - you can't start knitting a blanket on Christmas Eve!

Moukinets are the alternative answer to clear plas
I've created noseum meshbags as an alternative to the clear plastic bags that we've all been using to put our produce and bulk foods at the store and which we then stuff into our own reusable cloth shopping bags. Moukinets are vailable for purchase at www.moukisac.com
This is my active contribution for making and offering sustainable choices.
Cheers!

This is the best part of the day
She is all ready for bed, pyjamas on and teeth brushed. Now is the best part of the day when we share our story together. I go to town with silly voices and funny faces. "Guess how much I love you...to the moon and back". She sighs happily and snuggles down to sleep.
This is the most powerful thing you can do with a child...open a book and step into a world of imagination and wonder. 13 May 2008, 19:53
Plastic bags kill wildlife!
If more of us were to see the photos of whales or dolphins stomachs filled with plastic bags, or sea turtles suffocated by a bag or a heron 'wearing' a bag ,(a 'coat' that will cost it its life), I truly think the addiction to plastic bags can be broken out of sheer compassion.
At the very least, we need to recycle every piece of soft plastic that come into our worlds and, when we do that or, when we cannot and instead dispose of plastic in the garbage (when no other way is possible), there is one crucial thing we can do to slightly reduce the harm they will cause. Tie them up into a small ball so that they cannot cause as much damage to the animals that might come in contact with them. They are not as tempting looking to marine animals who might otherwise mistake them for jelly fish and they cannot get wrapped around animals bodies (or internal organs) to suffocate them or restrict their movement (causing drowning or starvation)
When garbage trucks transport or empty their loads, untied bags become airborne and can travel many kilometers away, wreaking havoc on eco systems and wildlife everywhere they land. 17 February 2008, 01:46
Telling stories
I was about to read a story to 3 of my younger siblings but they couldn't decide on a book so i said i would tell them a story in my head
My sister then told me i musn't tell lies when i told her that telling tales is different to lelling porkies she told me her teacher said she dosn't like people who tell tales.
Honestly , i'm going around in circles. 24 January 2008, 15:11
what i've done
since may this year i have not used one plastic bags. i bow down to you supre. 16 December 2007, 02:10C. I . Y...create it yourself
I managed to get my first collection of short stories published this year and am thrilled as they aim to transmit important eco-messages to children with colour, magic and music...With the Forest Fairies they learn the basics of recycling and in Fashiona Belle the highly creative C.I.Y. ace shows there is an alternative to digital gameboy domination...As a teacher and mother I felt the need to do something to try and change things especially on witnessing the increase of designer label pencils and pencil cases in the classroom.Act now , action speaks louder than words and that is just one of the things I have done to try and change attitudes and increase awareness. Watch this space for more....!!!!!

storytelling
What never breaks, never wears out and only gets better the more you give it away? A good story. There is a long history of oral storytelling in Scottish culture and it's a wonderful way to be close to our children. Who doesn't love a good story? Or remember the stories our parents and grandparents told us as children. It doesn't cost anything but a little time and imagination. Happy Christmas!
